Speed Indicator Device number five, ‘the smiley face speed check’ has been installed on Hospital Road, Hammerwich.
Number five is positioned on the approach to Coppy Nook Playing fields where mums and children cross the road to use the facilities.
The new S.I.D. means motorists are reminded of their speed in both directions when approaching the park.
Data gathered from our Local Speed Watch teams, shows that average speeds are greatly reduced, and the number of speeding motorists reported to the police has dropped by as much as 60%.
Hammerwich Parish Council funded the purchase and installation of all five S.I.D.s, a spokesman for the council said,
‘They are expensive, but we firmly believe they are a good investment, reducing speeds, risk of accidents and traffic noise.’
‘They are a major part of our road safety initiative, and they are popular with residents’.
